  • SAVE THE DATE! : Faculty of Medicine Grant Writing Workshop - June 21, 2012. The Faculty of Medicine will be hosting our annual Grant Writing Workshop on Thursday, June 21, 2012, from 1 to 4:30pm. This year, we will have a special focus on grant writing for CIHR and NSERC opportunities and panel discussions in basic and clinical science areas, population health, health services and knowledge translation! The workshop will take place in the Medical Sciences Building, 1 King's College Circle. Registration is now open. Please register at http://www.medresearch.utoronto.ca/GWW_registration.html.
  • The Collaborative Doctoral Program in Global Health (CPGH) at the University of Toronto. This program offers doctoral students the opportunity to develop cooperative and interdisciplinary graduate education and research in Global Health. We view global health as an integrative construct that focuses on the inter-relationships among local, regional, national, and international factors influencing health and the effective interventions and policies that will address these factors. This collaborative program enhances the student experience by offering a broad base of faculty expertise and an opportunity to share research ideas and results from multiple disciplinary perspectives.   • NSERC : 2012 Strategic Network Grants .This Program fosters the increased participation of Canadian-based companies and government organizations in academic research, increase training and qualified personnel in targeted areas, generate new knowledge with strong potential to strengthen Canada’s industrial base, generate wealth, create employment and/or influence public policy in areas of strategic importance and enhance Canada’s economy, society and/or environment within the next 10 years. Applicants can request between $2.5m and $5m over 5 years. Internal Deadline for LOIs: June 12, 2012.
  • Invitation to meet with Dendreon Corporation : “Developing Targeted Therapies for Cancer Patients”. The Innovations & Partnerships Office (IPO) is pleased to host one-on-one meetings with Dendreon Corporation to be held on Friday June 8, 2012. The theme of these meetings will focus on collaborative opportunities for the development of new innovative assays related to Dendreon’s core technology. Click here for details. If you would like to meet with senior Dendreon Corporation representatives to discuss possible collaborations related to any of the described areas of interest, please contact Peter Azmi (peter.azmi@utoronto.ca) with a short description of a proposed research partnership opportunity by May 25, 2012.
  • Canada-Latin America and the Caribbean Research Exchange Grants Program. The purpose of this program is to strengthen international partnerships and networks among academic researchers from Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean. This program is designed to support small collaborative research activities that will contribute to the creation, dissemination and application of knowledge in at least one of IDRC’s programming areas.   • U.S. Department of Defense : Fiscal Year 2012 recently released Funding Opportunities. Detailed descriptions of each of the funding opportunities, evaluation criteria, and submission requirements can be found in the respective Program Announcements.
  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association (ALS Association) : Clinical Research Pilot Study. This request for proposals (RFP) seeks to fund pilot clinical studies to obtain preliminary clinical data which will support applications to the National Institutes of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) for subsequent larger clinical trials of an intervention to treat or prevent ALS. Deadline for LOIs: May 28, 2012.
  • National Marfan Foundation (NMF) : Grant Program for Researchers with Faculty Appointments. Applications are being requested for a one- or two-year grant for basic or clinical research. The grant program is designed to provide financial support for investigators studying any or all disciplines involved in Marfan syndrome and related disorders. Deadline for Applications: June 11, 2012
  • LAM Foundation : Established Investigator Awards and Pilot Project Awards. Examples of competitive LAM proposals include those that focus on the genetic regulation of smooth muscle growth or the development of a smooth muscle cell line that is representative of the LAM lesion. Mechanistic, hypotheses-driven approaches of all types are welcomed. Formalin-fixed LAM tissues, dispersed LAM lung cells, genetic probes and other reagents are available. Deadline for LOIs: July 30, 2012.

  • Faculty of Medicine, U of T : Grant Miller Cancer Research Grants. The Grant Miller Cancer Research Grants have been established for feasibility studies or pilot projects in cancer research. This year, it is expected that two grants with a maximum budget of $25,000 each will be available. These grants are aimed at providing a modest level of support for the testing of innovative and original ideas in preparation for the submission of complete research proposals to peer review funding agencies or foundations. They are not meant to provide funding to supplement the on-going research of applicants. The competition is open to all faculty members in the Faculty of Medicine. Please view the terms in their entirety. Deadline for Applications: May 1, 2012.
  • CIHR University Delegate Message : "Budget 2012: Health Research Escapes Finance Minister’s Axe But Not Scalpel" A message from Dr. Reinhart Reithmeier, CIHR University Delegate, University of Toronto.
  • Ontario Genomics Institute : OGI 2012 SPARK Program. OGI is pleased to announce the launch of its 2012 SPARK program for high-impact, high-risk, early-stage technology development projects in the Genomic Sciences. The SPARK program will provide up to four awards of $50,000 each to be used for short duration research projects of 6-12 months. Proposals should be focused on unique and innovative projects where funding would be difficult to obtain due to the early-stage nature of the proposed research and that would result in transformative technology development that will ultimately lead to a commercial product.   • The Banting & Best Diabetes Centre : Graduate Studentships 2012/2013. Students need only submit one application to be considered for all awards. To be eligible, the applicant must be a registered full-time graduate student in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto by August 31, 2012 and must be carrying out studies in diabetes research. The applicant must be either a Canadian citizen or have permanent residence status in Ontario by August 31, 2012. The student's supervisor must hold a full-time faculty appointment with the University of Toronto and must also be a registered member of the BBDC at the time of application submission. Supervisors may submit a maximum of 2 applications for this competition. The deadline for receipt of applications is 5 p.m., Tuesday, June 5, 2012.
  • U.S. Department of Defense : Recently released Funding Opportunities.
  • Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation : New Biomarkers for HIV Incidence Measurement. The HIV Diagnostics team is now accepting Letters of Inquiry for the identification of novel biomarkers that can be used effectively to measure HIV incidence at the population level. They are looking for biomarkers that could be used alone or in combination, and that are at the initial development stage. Deadline for Letters of Inquiry: May 18, 2012.
  • Whitney Foundation, Helen Hay : Postdoctoral Research Fellowships. The Foundation supports early postdoctoral research training in all basic biomedical sciences. To attain its ultimate goal of increasing the number of imaginative, well-trained and dedicated medical scientists, the Foundation grants financial support of sufficient duration to help further the careers of young men and women engaged in biological or medical research. The Foundation expects that fellowship training will be obtained in an academic setting. Deadline for Applications: July 16, 2012.
  • DEBRA International : Epidermolysis Bullosa Research Grants. DEBRA is delighted that there are now multiple clinical trials happening around the world, focusing on the five or so key EB therapy types in development. To reflect this situation, and after consultation with the MSAP, DEBRA decided to place equal priority on translational-research grant applications that support therapy refinement, or help potential emerging treatments develop, and on continued fundamental research needed to further our understanding of EB, or discovery of novel therapeutic approaches. Deadline for Proposals: June 30, 2012

  • CIHR STAGE (Strategic Training Program for Advanced Genetic Epidemiology) : Dalla Lana School of Public Health invites applications from qualified pre- and postdoctoral candidates for a new training and career development opportunity. The program, hosted at the University of Toronto Dalla Lana School of Public Health, is designed to cross-train individuals at the interface of genetics and population health sciences in genetic epidemiology and statistical genetics—two disciplines facing a massive shortage of qualified individuals in Canada and elsewhere. The program offers a unique and enriched training experience, plus internships, exchanges, competitive stipends, top-ups, and merit awards. Next application deadline: April 12, 2012.   • Terry Fox Research Institute and CIHR : Recently Announced Funding Opportunities.
    • The Terry Fox New Investigators Award (2012). The Terry Fox Research Institute is pleased to announce a new competition for Terry Fox New Investigators. The purpose of this award is to provide outstanding young researchers with support as they develop their career as independent research scientists or clinician scientists and to undertake high-quality research into cancer in close collaboration with established Terry Fox research teams. Deadline Application Summaries: April 23, 2012
    • The Terry Fox New Frontiers Program in Cancer at CIHR - Pre-Announcement. These grants of between $750,000 and $1.5 million per year are awarded to groups of investigators to support new frontiers in Canadian cancer research (i.e., breakthrough and transformative biomedical, clinical and translational research which may form the basis for innovative cancer prevention, diagnosis and/or treatment). Total awarded annually: $12 million. The full description of the funding opportunity and instructions on how to apply will be posted on the CIHR website around mid-April.
  • 2012 NSERC Collaborative Health Research Projects (CHRP) Program : The CHRP program supports focused collaborative research projects involving any field of the natural sciences or engineering and the health sciences. Successful projects must be novel and lead to health benefits for Canadians, more effective health services, or economic development in health-related areas. The proposed projects may range from fundamental knowledge creation to research on knowledge application relevant to industry or public policy. The CHRP program is jointly funded by NSERC and the CIHR. NSERC will be managing the application process. Additional projects related to the strategic priorities of CIHR Institutes may also be supported through this program. Internal Deadline for completed Notice of Intent: April 16, 2012.   • American Academy of Pediatrics : Neonatal Resuscitation Program. Funds are available from the NRP to support research that furthers knowledge in the area of neonatal resuscitation. These funds may be used to generate pilot data to allow the investigator to develop the basis for an application for independent research support through conventional granting mechanisms. Deadline for Letters of Intent: May 4, 2012.
  • Progeria Research Foundation : Medical Research Grants. The Foundation awards grants to applicants who seek to conduct research to find the cause, treatment, or cure for Hutchinson- Gilford Progeria Syndrome. Submission Deadline: May 4, 2012
  • Batten Disease Support and Research Association (BDSRA) : International Project Grant. The BDSRA is has announced that funds are available to conduct research directly relevant to the development of treatment of lysososomal storage and neurodegenerative diseases, specifically, Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinoses (NCL). Submission Deadline: May 25, 2012.
  • Fondation Armand-Frappier : Postdoctoral Fellowships. These fellowships (minimum $36,000 per year) are for candidates wishing to pursue their training with one of the research professors at the INRS - Institut Armand-Frappier, a university centre specializing in graduate programs in the following areas: 1)Infectious diseases, immunity, cancer and epidemiology 2)Environmental toxicology and pharmachemistry 3)Environmental biotechnology. Deadline for Submissions: April 13, 2012.
